The 2012 Ford Edge with the EcoBoost engine also gets a six-speed automatic transmission with an active warm-up system to reduce internal friction at start, and an active grille shutter system that closes as vehicle speed increases to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. The 2012 Ford Edge revealed their engine at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show and was destined to go on sale by December that same year. However, production of the EcoBoost powered 2012 Ford Edge is now scheduled to start later this month. The difference between a 2012 Ford Edge with EcoBoost and an edge without is 3 MPG on the highway. The EcoBoost engine is nothing to sniff at either with 240hp and 275 pound-feet of torque. While the EcoBoost’s horsepower is a lot lower than its 2.5-liter V6 cousin which boasts 285hp, the 2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost lays the smack down by beating its less gas-friendly incarnation in torque with an extra 22 pound-feet.
In the 2012 Ford Edge interior, we can see there’s a tilt/telescoping steering wheel -including: cruise controls, 5-way My Ford controls, secondary audio controls, also completed with a securiLock encrypted passive anti-theft system (EPATS). There’s some other changes in the 2012 Ford Edge, exterior or interior, but over all is minimal. The 2012 Ford Edge will continue to be sized and priced in Ford’s lineup between the compact 2012 Ford Escape crossover and the longer seven-passenger 2012 Ford Flex. It’ll again be sold alongside the Ford Explorer, a similarly sized crossover that squeezes in a third-row seat and aims for more of a rugged-family feel with more traditional SUV looks and better off-road capability than the 2012 Ford Edge. Available on the SEL, Limited, and Sport models will be all-wheel-drive (AWD). Prices for the 2012 Ford Edge weren’t available in time for this review, but expect them to remain close to model-year 2011 levels. This suggests a 2012 Ford Edge base-price range of roughly $28,000-$37,000. The 2012 Ford Edge expected to be launched in September 2011.
The Ford Edge faces fierce competition. Ford’s own Flex and Explorer SUVs are other options, while the Nissan Murano and Mazda CX-9 are more athletic alternatives. Many challengers, including the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, offer better fuel economy and power. The 2012 Ford Edge is a solid SUV in a brimming sea of solid SUVs. The choice is difficult, and the Edge’s high-dollar sticker makes things no easier.
