2009 Audi Q5 Preview

Audi is the last member of the "Other Big Three" to jump on the premium compact SUV bandwagon. As one of the segment pioneers, BMW is already firmly established with the X3, while Mercedes-Benz is counterattacking since January with the new GLK-Class. Outside of the German hotbed, the competition includes the Land Rover LR2, Lexus RX, Acura RDX, Infiniti EX and upcoming Volvo XC60.

The new 2009 Q5 is an extremely accomplished SUV displaying a variety of dynamic skills.

The all-new 2009 Audi Q5 perfectly completes the four-ring brand's lineup. First of all, styling holds no major surprises and could even be described as conservative. Every single Audi design cue is found on this vehicle. The oversized monoframe grille is extremely well integrated to the front fascia, setting the Q5 apart from any other rival. Clearly, designers took plenty of inspiration from the larger Q7 during the development process. Every detail marks an evolution, obviously in scaled-down format.

The Q5's headlight cluster design is particularly well executed. Audi is a master in the art of transforming a basic rectangular shape into an interestingly complex structure. The unique combination of bi-xenon lamps and light-emitting diodes (LED) makes for an original look that you won't find anywhere else in the industry.

The Q5 is derived from the same Audi-exclusive platform that was first developed for the next-generation A4 and, unsurprisingly, the interior layout of this compact SUV/crossover is a close copy of the popular sedan's. Like all Audi models, build quality, material selection as well as fit and finish are exemplary. The company has a select recipe when it comes to designing car interiors; it's a shame they stubbornly refuse to share it with the world.

Ergonomics are very good, although HVAC controls are partially obstructed by the gear selector. Of course, like just about every other competitor, the Q5 boasts comprehensive equipment. There's even a climate-controlled compartment that can keep your beverages hot or cool.

On the mechanical front, Audi wisely decided to carry the 3.2-liter V6 over to their new SUV. This 270-horsepower engine makes the Q5 a few ponies ahead of most opponents. Once again, it comes as no surprise that quattro all-wheel drive and a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission are part of the mix.

The optional Audi Drive Select system will allow owners to customize driving dynamics at any given time. It controls the vehicle's adaptive suspension, dynamic steering, transmission shift characteristics and engine response. Moreover, like the rest of the lineup, the Q5 will offer a stylish S line package that further brings out its sporty personality. Also available are different sets of aluminum wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches in diameter

Audi might arrive a bit late to the dance but the wait was worth it as the new 2009 Q5 is an extremely accomplished SUV displaying a variety of dynamic skills. The table is set and everything is in place for the Q5 to have a long, successful career. Base MSRP is $43,400, putting it right in the middle of the pack.

Unsurprisingly, the interior layout of this compact SUV/crossover is a close copy of the A4.
